Day 2: Start of the Weird (Sproat Lake – Nanaimo)

May 11, 2014

On this trip I’m intentionally seeking out the odd and eccentric, especially those endearing things small towns come up with to put themselves on the map. There were a couple on my itinerary for today but before I got to them I created a spectacle of myself chasing an elusive wifi connection. My data plan on the phone refuses to acknowledge me or the insistence from the carrier that everything is in order. So planning for the evening or next day becomes nigh impossible. After an arduous and fruitless climb into the city centre of Port Alberni in the hopes of finding a Tim Hortons, they’re suppose to grow like weeds, I accepted defeat until I noticed a ratty sign declaring free wireless at an equally questionable motel. I considered checking in for an hour but decided to first see if they protected their precious commodity. They didn’t and had a strong signal. So instead of the privacy of a room, I worked beside the road. I managed to reset my phone to factory settingsĀ and restored it again but to no effect. More interesting, some people stopped to chat, one guy offered directions if I needed and then suggested a better internet connection back up the hill. No thank you! When I heard someone yell my name, I got a little worried. Turns out it was the park warden from the night before.

Day 1: The Trip Begins (Tofino – Sproat Lake)

May 10, 2014

After much heming and hawing, the tour finally began today and a stringent taskmaster of a day it was. Getting across the island by land allows for only one route and most of the portion I covered today was devoid of civilization except cars on the road. Cycling isolates at times but when there are no options for interactions or potential assistance, it’s a little daunting to start your trip that way. I should add no food options either but what I carried so I stocked a bit more than called for. Not being as conditioned as I would like, it was a little terrified that the first possible spot to call it a day was over 100km from the start. Yesterday I traveled by bus to Tofino along the same route and kept looking for spots where stealth camping might be possible. There were few. Thankfully I didn’t need any of the potential sites I spied previously. Read more

I am a homebody and like my routines so the approach of the trip has been a mixture of excitement and perturbation. I thrill thinking about the many different places I’m going to see but my stomach tightens at the realization that at the end of the day my bed will be far away. Just what have I got myself into? Besides food, my life will be reduced to these few belongings. Of course the anxiety isn’t about the things I’ll do without but the complete openness of it all. No schedule, no one relying on me or expecting anything of me, only open roads beckon. Yikes! Simply getting to the west coast is weighting the scale from anxiety toward excitement. After all now there’s just a minor issue of cycling back across the country over the next three months. Read more
